Course Outcome:
Upon completion of the course the participants should be able to:
- Understand various molecular techniques used in the field of diagnostics.
- Proficiently execute molecular methods, encompassing the extraction of nucleic acids.
- Apply the polymerase chain reaction in the context of molecular diagnostics.
Course Content: The training has 3 modules:
Module I: Theory and practical sessions on different nucleic acid extraction methods:
Basic introduction: The central dogma in molecular biology; The genetic code; Mutations; introduction to Protein synthesis; Molecular techniques: Nucleic acid extraction methods, Nucleic acid quantification and purity check; Protein extraction and Quantification methods. Agarose gel electrophoresis and Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (PAGE).
Module II: Theory and practical sessions on PCR and types of PCR.
PCR: Principle, procedure, types, and applications (Reverse transcriptase PCR, Real Time PCR and Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification). DNA sequencing methods –sanger sequencing and Next-generation sequencing (NGS).
Module II: Molecular Techniques for diagnosis.
DHPLC, Mass spectroscopy, Hybridization techniques: Southern, Northern, in-situ Hybridization, FISH. DNA microarray. Neonatal and Prenatal disease diagnostics.
