About Course

The Objectives of the course are:

  • To introduce students to basic concepts of Modernism
  • To give students an understanding of modernist aesthetics and its rejection of earlier realist modes of representation in art
  • To introduce students to the historical context of Europe of the early 20th century
  • To introduce students to notions of subjectivity, self-consciousness : defining characteristics of the modernist artist
  • To help students make logical connections among literature, art and culture.
  • And finally, to guide students to analyze the political pretensions of Modernism.

What Will You Learn?

  • After successful completion of this course a candidate would be able to :
  •  Understand the relations between societal modernity and Aesthetic modernism
  •  Have more clarity about the emergence of modernist movement in Europe
  •  Understand the cultural change that swept across Europe in the first half of the 20th century
  •  Make a critical assessment of 20th century EuropeanCulture
