22410 Understanding Radiations: Benefits and Hazards

About Course
Objectives: Primary goal of the course is to know the basic facts about types of radiations. Information about its sources, applications, detection of these radiations benefits and hazards.
Learning Outcomes: This course will provide a clear understanding about ionizing and non-ionizing radiations. The knowledge on origin of all kind of radiation, its properties and applications in various fields.
Course Content
Unit I: Introduction to the concept of radiation, Basic definitions-wave, amplitude, frequency, time period, phase etc., Types of radiations: Electromagnetic radiation, Particle radiation, Neutron radiation and Acoustic radiation. Propagation of electromagnetic radiation. (15 hours)
Unit II: Ionizing Radiations: X-rays, Gamma rays, neutron radiation and particle radiations. Principles of detection of radiations and their applications, Radiation hazards: Ionizing effects, damage to biological systems etc. Non-Ionizing Radiations: Radio waves, Micro waves, Infra-red radiation, Ultraviolet radiation, their production and detection. Other non-ionizing radiations and applications. (15 hours)
Duration: 30 hours of interaction lectures online/recorded.
Assignment (Descriptive type) 10 marks; Unit test (MCQ type) 10 marks. End semester Test (Objective type): 30 marks
Time: Monday to Saturday, 10.00 am to 11.00 am
Eligibility: Any candidate from BA/BSc/BCom/BBA /BCA stream are eligible to apply for the course
Certificate: Digitally generated Certificates will be issued to students who have successfully completed the course by the college.
